CEREC® dental crowns are becoming a popular choice for patients needing dental restorations. While they are relatively new to dentistry, they have been proven to be successful in restoring damaged teeth. However, because they have not been around as long as traditional crowns, there are not as many options when it comes to material choices.
CEREC dental crown options
Outlined below are the material options for CEREC® dental crowns, as well as some additional information on how they differ from traditional crowns.
Ceramic CEREC® crowns
The main material that CEREC® crowns are offered in is ceramic. The CAD/CAM technology that CEREC® crowns rely on uses a block of ceramic to source the dental crown. Ceramic has been used in dentistry for many years due to its strength and ability to match the patient's tooth color. When a general dentist creates a CEREC® crown in the office, patients can expect to have a perfectly matched crown that is impossible to detect. Additionally, the dental crown will be strong and reliable for many years, so long as proper care is maintained.
Composite resin CEREC crowns
Another CEREC® crown material option is composite resin. Although ceramic is the most popular option and typically always available in the CAD/CAM technology, composite resin is an option too. Composite resin is another material that general dentists have been using for ages. It is white in color and can be easily molded to look discreet. However, it has been said that composite resin is not as reliable when used in dentistry.
What makes CEREC crowns different?
CEREC dental crowns offer the same results as traditional dental crowns do, however, they are created and administered much differently. Traditional dental crowns typically require two to three appointments because the crown has to be made in a dental lab over a two week period. CEREC dental crowns, on the other hand, can be created in just one appointment at the dentist's office. Many people find CEREC crowns to be beneficial because they save time and are much more convenient than traditional ones. Additionally, they reduce any potential injury risk because there is no period of wearing a temporary crown.
The other main difference between CEREC dental crowns and traditional ones is that there are not as many options. CEREC dental crowns are almost always made of ceramic materials, while traditional ones can be made of metal alloys, porcelain, gold, composite resin or even a hybrid between metal and porcelain. In this day and age, most people are not against a ceramic dental crown, but there are those who would prefer the durability of a gold or metal alloy-based one.
